The UAB Medicine Observership program (run via the Physician Scientist Development Office, PSDO) gives pre-health students the chance to shadow UAB Medicine providers. It’s explicitly framed as a way for pre-health students to gain exposure to the everyday practice of medicine, with required HIPAA training and an online Clinical Observing Request process.

UAB Heersink School of Medicine – Undergraduate Summer & Pre-Med Programs (e.g., VIPMed, RaCE4Path, SIBS)

Type: Summer research + clinical exposure programs for undergrads Location: UAB Heersink School of Medicine, Birmingham

UAB Heersink runs several summer programs for undergraduates/post-baccs interested in medicine and biomedical research, including:

· Virtual Immersion Pre-Med Program (VIPMed) – a pre-med–focused program in the Undergraduate Programs section.

· Summer in Biomedical Sciences (SIBS) Undergraduate Research Program – 8-week lab-based program in modern biology and medicine.

· RaCE4Path (Research and Clinical Experience in Pathology) – blends research and clinical training in pathology; undergrads are recruited through the PSDO portal and work with clinical mentors.

These programs provide hands-on research and, in some tracks, shadowing/clinical exposure that’s very attractive for pre-med CVs.

East Alabama Health Job Shadowing Program (Opelika)

Type: Hospital job shadowing (including Radiology & other clinical areas) Location: East Alabama Health (EAMC), Opelika

East Alabama Health offers a job shadowing program for students who must complete shadowing to enter or graduate from clinical school programs. The hospital serves as a learning site for Nursing, Radiology, Physical Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, and other disciplines. Shadowers get short-term observational experiences (1–3 days per week) arranged through the Education Center.

Huntsville Hospital’s Corporate University runs several student programs:

· Job Shadowing Program – allows students to observe a wide range of health care careers in the workplace; students call Corporate University and submit a job shadowing application.

· Radiologic Technology, Patient Care Aide Trainee, Surgical Technology, etc. – listed under Additional Student Resources; these provide more formal training pathways in imaging and allied health, useful for pre-med students wanting hands-on skills in a clinical environment.
